Jeremiah Spence is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

He specializes in global media, comparative global media systems and, more specifically, on how refugees consume media and the relationship between this media consumption and the acculturation process.  The underlying concern of his research is an understanding of the conditions for refugees to integrate into society while maintaining their unique identities.

Jeremiah Spence is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

He specializes in global media, comparative global media systems and, more specifically, on how refugees consume media and the relationship between this media consumption and the acculturation process.  The underlying concern of his research is an understanding of the conditions for refugees to integrate into society while maintaining their unique identities.

Jeremiah obtained his PhD in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin (USA) in 2015. His dissertation, “Exploring Trends in Brazilian Television Consumption: A Quantitative Study of Major Urban Centres from 2004 to 2014 and A Case Study of Two Rural Communities in the Amazonian Region,” provides a detailed examination of Brazilian media habits from the lens of social class and regionalization.

Jeremiah is also the founder and past editor-in-chief of the peer reviewed academic publication, the Journal of Virtual Worlds Research.  Jeremiah lived and did research in Brazil for 8 years on the themes of ICTs and New Media, and was a visiting researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, Federal University of Bahia, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.

A native of Texas, in the United States, Jeremiah studies Brazilian and Latin American Studies at the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies at the University of Texas in Austin, and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.  Jeremiah also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas in Austin.
