Jeroen Vester is a PhD candidate of the Econometrics department at Erasmus School of Economics, working on the project ‘Real-time Synchromodal Planning’. Synchromodal transport exploits the opportunities to incorporate more sustainable modes (like trains, shortsea and ferries) in the transport of freight. Synchromodal transport exploits the opportunities to incorporate more sustainable modes (like trains, shortsea and ferries) in the transport of freight. Online planning still remains a complex task in practice, planners often incorporate adjustments to the plan manually, and it is even more complex in the context of synchromodal transport. Recently, several research projects have introduced decision-support algorithms and heuristics to solve logistics problems in synchromodal systems. However, the existing algorithms are not real-time, despite real-time data being available on increasingly large scales. As a result, they do not consider the benefit of self-learning mechanisms in case of disturbances. This research project aims to develop a real-time synchromodal planning algorithm capable of solving real case problems and integrate self-learning mechanism to introduce recovery strategies in case of small-scale disturbances.
