Profile

Koen Stapelbroek is an Associate Professor specialised in the history of political thought and public administration.

He completed Master degrees in Economics and Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam, also studied at the University of Turin, and obtained an MPhil degree (1999) in Political Thought and Intellectual History and a PhD (2004) in History at the University of Cambridge (King’s College).

From 2009-2011 he worked as an Academy of Finland researcher at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. Previously (2005-2007) he was involved as a post-doctoral researcher in the NWO-funded ‘Shifts in Governance’ project ‘Conquest, Competition and Ideology: Inventing Governance in the Dutch Golden Age’. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 he was an invited fellow of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. For the Erasmus Center for Early-Modern Studies, he organised several international conferences and seminars - in the Netherlands, as well as in Italy, Finland and Sweden, among which the European Science Foundation Research Conference ‘Reforming the European State System in the Long Eighteenth Century’.

Since 2014 he is an Academy of Finland Fellow and runs a 5-year research project on ‘Historical instruments of European integration: The commercial configuration of the Balance of Power’. In Helsinki he is Director of the Helsinki Centre for Intellectual History and developed projects on the Naumann eighteenth-century pamphlet collection of the National Library, on ‘The Politics of Commercial Treaties in the Eighteenth Century’ and on early nineteenth-century ‘True vs False’ liberalism. From Helsinki as well, he directs the international research network ‘A Global History of Free Ports Capitalism, Commerce and Geopolitics (1600–1900)’.

He published numerous  articles and edited volumes, mostly on eighteenth-century political thought and economic reform debates, among which two special issues of ‘History of European Ideas’, a special issue of ‘COLLeGIUM: Studies Across Disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences’ on ‘Trade and War: The Neutrality of Commerce in the Inter-State System’ and three collaborative volumes: ‘Patriots and Reformers: The Rise of Economic Societies in the Eighteenth Century’ (Palgrave, 2012; co-edited with Jani Marjanen), ‘The Politics of Commercial Treaties in the Eighteenth Century’ (Palgrave, 2017; co-edited with Antonella Alimento) and ‘The legacy of Vattel’s Droit des gens’ (Palgrave, 2019; co-edited with Antonio Trampus). His first research monograph, entitled ‘Love, Self-Deceit and Money: Commerce and Morality in the EarlyNeapolitan Enlightenment’ (University of Toronto Press, 2008) won the Dutch-Flemish Association for Italian Studies research prize 2009.

Currently, he is finishing two monographs, on European perceptions of the rise and fall of the Dutch trade republic; and on the intellectual history, political economy and moral philosophy of free trade, developing comparative research on such debates in the old Italian states, and, finally, setting up a project on the history and political theory of public administration and international organisations from the late nineteenth century.

He is a senior member of The Netherlands Institute of Government (NIG) and member of the Huizinga Institute (The Research Institute and Netherlands Graduate School of Cultural History). He is a member of the editorial boards of 'History of European Ideas', ‘Global Intellectual History’, ‘Contributions to the History of Concepts’, ‘Il Pensiero Economico Italiano’, ‘Biblioteca storica degli economisti italiani’, ‘Zoon Politikon’ as well as a member of the International Advisory Board of the ‘Institute of Intellectual History’, University of St. Andrews and the Board of Consulting Editors of 'COLLeGIUM: Studies Across Disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences'.
