Rik Joosen is a PhD candidate at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology (DPAS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).
In my PhD project, I focus on the interaction between EU agencies and the companies they regulate. EU agencies need to gain highly technical information from regulated companies. This ensures that agencies understand the context they operate in and come up with good regulatory decisions. But at the same time, it is important that companies do not take advantage of the agency's dependency on them. EU agencies need to operate independently from companies to ensure that European consumers can safely buy and consume products on the European market. I aim to show how EU agencies interact with these companies, given the complicated dynamic between them, and address what the outcomes of this approach are.
