Profile
Reinout van der Veer is a PhD candidate at the Department of Public Administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Erasmus University Rotterdam and graduated cum laude from the Research Master "Research in public administration and organizational sciences", a Master’s program shared between the universities of Utrecht, Rotterdam, Amsterdam (VU), Tilburg, Nijmegen and Twente.
During his Master’s program Reinout also worked at the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) and received the NWO Research Talent Grant (2016) from the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research.
In his current position as PhD candidate, Reinout aims to examine the relationship between the increasing public contestation of and domestic political opposition to the European Union and the implementation and enforcement of EU policy. Specifically, he aims to explain the effects of this ongoing politicization of the EU on the application of European economic and fiscal surveillance mechanisms by the EU’s executives, most notably the European Commission. To do so, he uses a mixed-method approach (nested case studies) that relies on statistical modeling and extensive subsequent case study research.
