Shangwei Wu is a PhD candidate in the Department of Media & Communication at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication.

With Prof. Susanne Janssen and Dr. Janelle Ward respectively being his promotor and co-promotor, Shangwei studies Chinese gay dating apps and processes of identity formation.

Before coming to Erasmus University Rotterdam, he studied in Renmin University of China from 2009 to 2016. He obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the School of Journalism and Communication. In 2014, he also studied international affairs at Sciences Po in Paris. He worked as an intern at CCTV (China Central Television) in 2012 and the Wall Street Journal in 2015.

Shangwei’s main research interests are in discourse & identity, gender studies, and nationalism. In 2016, he presented his first English paper ‘Making History Together: Derogatory Online Comments on Chinese Mythic Plays as Echoes of Hegemonic Discourse’ in the 66th ICA Annual Conference in Fukuoka.
