Talitha Stam is an anthropologist and sociologist working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Her research mainly deals with social inequalities and the role of education.
Both during her PhD and current postdoctoral research Talitha coordinated projects with extensive quantitative and qualitative, including ethnographic, data collection with children and young people in primary, secondary and lower senior vocational (mbo) schools in the Netherlands and the UK. She has built a strong network with practitioners in the field and governmental officials on local, national and EU level.
In 2018, Talitha received her PhD degree after successfully defending her doctoral dissertation What a Girl Wants: An ethnographic study on the aspirations of 'white' Dutch girls in lower vocational education at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her doctoral study has been discussed in various Dutch media, such as: Telegraaf, Radio Rijnmond, Volkskrant, Trouw, Radio 1, Sociale Vraagstukken, Studio Erasmus, De Kanttekening, Erasmus Magazine and De Pedagoog. As well as in the Dutch City Councils of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Currently, Talitha coordinates the Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens funded research project: Making Rotterdam’s children more resilient: Closing the socio-economic/ethnic gap in students’ school performances by strengthening partnerships between parents, schools, and children. For this, we work in close collaboration with our societal partner Samen Leren/Bureau Frontlijn from the municipality of Rotterdam. Moreover, she is involved in the new Honours Programme ‘Tackling Inequalities’ for EUR master students.
Before joining EUR, Talitha worked as an academic research coordinator at the IS Academy Human Security in Fragile States at Wageningen University for which she travelled to various (post) disaster regions, including Haiti, North Uganda and South Sudan. She combined her studies with journalism reports, producing professional blogs, radio reports and two short documentaries.
