Toelatingseisen voor Pre-master Media Studies

On this page, you will find more information about the entry requirements for the English-language pre-master's programme Media Studies.

  • You are eligible for the pre-master's Media Studies programme if you meet the following requirements:

    • You hold a Dutch HBO degree with a good overall result, or an equivalent higher vocational qualification from an international institution, in the field of media and communication.
    • You hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognized Dutch university programme or an equivalent qualification from an international institution, but you lack prior training in media and communication and/or social scientific research methods.
    • You meet the language requirements.
  • Among candidates who meet the above requirements, a further selection is made according to:

    • Entry exam (students with an academic bachelor are exempted from the entry exam)
    • Motivation
    • International background and orientation
    • Connection between previous studies and the Media Studies programme

    Students with a relevant bachelor degree from a University of Applied Sciences or who are about to graduate this upcoming summer can participate in the entry exam for the premaster.

    Next to the entry exam the selection commission will also consider your motivation and your grade point average (GPA) of your previous education. Your motivation and GPA need to be uploaded in your digital application file.

  • All teaching is carried out in English. We must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English to cope with the course from the start. Therefore, if your first language is not English or if the language of instruction of your latest previous degree is not English, we ask you to provide evidence of your command of English. You should include your test scores, if available, in the relevant section of the application form. If you receive an offer of admission, it will be subject to proof of your score. English tests must be less than two years old at the time of application. If you have not yet taken the test, your application can be considered in its absence, but any offer will be conditional on your achieving the required score.

    To be admitted, you must satisfy the following requirements:

    • TOEFL ( (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum overall score of
      • 100 in the internet based test,
      • 250 in the computer-based test or
      • 600 in the paper test.
    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 7.0 (
    • Cambridge C1 Advanced (former CAE): minimum grade C/185;
    • Cambridge C2 Proficiency (former CPE): minimum grade C/185;

    You do not need to provide further evidence of English proficiency if:

    • you hold an International Baccalaureate diploma including English Standard Level (A) or English Higher Level (A or B);
    • for graduates of recognised academic programmes taught entirely in English, the obligation to take a language test may be dropped after considering their academic performance;
    • you obtained at least 2,5 years of secondary education in Australia, Canada (other than Quebec), New Zealand, South-Africa, The USA, the UK or Ireland;
    • you hold a European Baccalaureate diploma including English as 1st or 2nd language.

    If you have not yet taken any English test, we recommend that you take the IELTS or TOEFL.

    Test results of the ITP/TOEFL (Institutional Testing Program) offered by the Language & Training Centre of Erasmus University Rotterdam are also accepted for this programme. The minimum score that is required is 600. 

    Test results of the First Certificate in English (FCE) and the TOEIC-test are not accepted.

    You are eligible to apply for the pre-Master without completing the English language requirements yet, however every admission offer made to you will be conditional. Please plan your test as soon as possible. We need the results ultimately by April the 15th (non-EEA students) or May the 15th (EEA students).

  • The entry exam for the English pre-master's Media Studies is a two hour analytical test. Students have to write an essay about a topic that will be announced on the test day. You cannot study for this exam.

    Register for the exam

    After the assessment of your application the selection commission will invite you to participate in the entry exam if you meet the entry requirements. Our admission office will contact you after your registration in Studielink.

    Costs of the entry exam

    The costs for the entry exam are 25 euro and need to be paid before the student participates in the entry exam. After your application is completed our admission office will invite you for the entry exam. The entry exam will take place in May and in June, You can register for the date that suits you best.

    Please note that next to the entry exam students also have to participate in an English language test at their own expense. Only students whose first language is English or the language of instruction of the latest previous education was fully in English will receive an exemption from the English language proficiency.
