As of 1 April 2024, Dr Sonia Bhalotra has been appointed as Professor of Health and Gender Economics (0.2 FTE) on a chair in the programme “Towards Inclusive Academia” at Erasmus School of Economics.
Research expertise in health and gender
The research of applied economist Sonia Bhalotra focuses on questions of social and economic importance using state of the art micro econometric techniques for causal identification. Her research expertise is in health (including mental health, early life health, maternal health and, recently, chronic disease) and gender (including pay gaps, violence against women, fertility, abortion, IVF, property rights for women and political representation for women). As a spinoff of these primary fields, she also has a few papers on political identity.
Appointment and chair contribute to more gender diversity

About Sonia Bhalotra
Sonia Bhalotra is Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. She obtained an MPhil and DPhil from Oxford and a BSc Hons from Delhi. She is currently Principal Investigator on an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council 2021-2026, Co-Investigator ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change at ISER Essex 2019-2024, Co-Investigator ESRC Project on Human Rights, Big Data and Technology at the Human Rights Centre Essex 2015-2021 and collaborator on a NIH (and, initially CEDIL) funded project 2020-2025. She is recently leading the Wellbeing Theme at the CAGE Research Centre at Warwick.
Since 2015 Sonia Bhalotra has publications in the American Economic Review, the Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Journal, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association and Journal of Human Resources. Her publication list is not only very long but also quite diverse.
