Investing in watches: Is it worth your time?

Telegraaf
Suitcase full of watches

Mary Pieterse-Bloem, Professor of Financial Markets at Erasmus School of Economics, gives her opinion on investing in watches in a Telegraaf article. This may seem like an attractive investing sector, yet is advised against by many experts. You can read her opinion below.

Luxury watches are increasingly being used as investment material. Yet the top executive of Swiss brand Rolex warns against investing. Pieterse-Bloem also agrees. According to her, something is an investment only when there is a fixed reward for the risk you run. With a share, you would get a dividend, but when investing in watches, it is much more risky. After all, you are dependent on how other people assess the value. If you still want to earn something from it, you have to take into account other relevant factors. For instance, there is maintenance involved and there is a chance of your watch being stolen. Pieterse-Bloem's final advice is therefore to buy watches mainly to wear and enjoy them.
