How do you deal with traffic nuisance?

'Oh Ja Joh?!' aflevering 2
Skyline of Rotterdam with blue skies.

How can we best tackle traffic nuisance? And what exactly falls under the definition of traffic nuisance? In the second episode of 'Oh Ja Joh?!', we speak with behavioural scientist Inge Merkelbach from Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Together with her team, she does research into how to combat traffic nuisance.

The request for Merkelbach's research team came from the municipality: how can Rotterdam deal with what the municipality calls "traffic jerks"? The municipality asked her team to focus on three types of traffic nuisance: show-off driving, loitering in parking lots, and speeding.

Do not use terms like "traffic jerk"

The research yielded three recommendations for the municipality. One of these is that the municipality would be better off not using the term "traffic jerk" in its own communication. 'Our advice is to work with the target group. To do that, you have to approach people respectfully. Terms like "hooligan" or "traffic jerk" do not help with that', Merckelbach says.
