There are additional financial supports options that you can apply for on top of your grant, with their own requirements and documents.

Sustainable travel

If you use an environmentally friendly, sustainable means of transport for your journey to and from your host country, you may be entitled to a 'Green travel' top-up payment. Sustainable means for transport are train, bus.

Indicate in your application that you are planning to travel green. After your exchange you can be asked to provide proof of your travels, such as showing a train ticket.

Exclusive Interrail Global Pass for Erasmus+ participants.

  • Eurail and ESN have launched an Interrail Global Pass for Erasmus+ participants. These passes can be used to travel to and from the host destination and can be used over a period of 6 months. They are only available for students with an Erasmus+ grant and costs either 212 euro (4 days travel) or 301 euro (6 days travel). The Erasmus+ grant contains a travel allowance which could cover (part of) this price. Depending on the distance travelled students can get 285, 417 or 535 euro as Erasmus+ green travel compensation.

Inclusion Top Up

If you receive a supplementary grant from DUO and/or have a diagnosed medical condition that influences and complicates travel and studying abroad, you may be entitled to an 'Inclusion' top-up payment of up to € 250 per month.

  • After the nomination we will inform you how you can apply for this additional support.

Disability and/or special needs support

If you have a disability and/or special needs and you are eligible for an Erasmus+ for studies or internships grant, the EUR can apply for additional financial support from the Erasmus+ programme on your behalf.

  • The deadline for application is 3 months before the start date of your exchange.
  • You will need to have demonstrable extra costs due to your special needs (such as buying specific equipment, paying a caretaker or using a special taxi service) that are not covered by your health or travel insurance.
  • The extra costs cannot be covered by the Inclusion top up.

During the academic year 2024-2025 the Erasmus University Rotterdam starts a pilot for the International Mobility grant. This grant offers the opportunity to fund students going outside of the EU/EEA with an Erasmus+ grant. Since this is a pilot, not all options as presented under the Erasmus+ Programme are available, and the grant is only offered for a limited number of partners institutions.

General Information

  • The International Mobility grant is part of the Erasmus+ Programme.
  • This is a pilot from Erasmus University Rotterdam and therefore not all options from the International Mobility grant under the Erasmus+ programme are available.
  • During this pilot only the following partners participate: Australia - Western Sydney University; Canada - University of Calgary; Japan - Keio University; Singapore – Nanyang Technological University; United Kingdom - University of Leeds. Students going on exchange to other partners cannot apply for this grant.
  • The scholarship is only available for students going on exchange in the first semester of academic year 2024-2025.
  • The scholarship will be granted for a maximum of 3,5 months. If your exchange is longer, then your grant will still be for 3,5 months. In case your exchange is shorter, the grant amount is based on the total amount of physical study at the partner university.
  • You cannot receive this grant if you already receive the NL Scholarship Grant or a grant from the host university.

Grant Amounts

During the pilot in 2024-2025 the maximum grant that can be received is for 3,5 months.

Is studying abroad expensive?

Plan your budget on time

Didn't find a scholarship? Don't worry!

Do you have questions?

In a lot of cases you will receive the scholarship for only one year. Please check the scholarship criteria carefully to avoid unpleasant surprises. Think about ways to finance your 2nd and/or 3rd year in advance.

Most of the requirement apply to:

  1. Study results / being an excellent student;
  2. Being able to demonstrate your ambition;
  3. Level of study;
  4. Obtained diplomas;
  5. Country of origin.

Your chances are slim, meaning that most students won't gain a scholarship. There are hundreds of new students each year, but there is not an equal amount of scholarships available. But you never know, you might just be one of the lucky (chosen) ones. As long as you take into account that you may have to arrange financial aid in a different way, you're fine.

That depends on the scholarship. The scholarship may be a partial tuition fee waiver which means you still need to pay tuition fee. Please check the criteria of your scholarship carefully.

In Holland, higher education is subsidized, which means that tuition fees can be kept relatively low, especially compared with the United Kingdom and the United States. Because of this, we do not have an extensive scholarship programme. This doesn't mean we don't have them at all though, so make sure to have a closer look.

In order to filter out the scholarships you might be able to apply for, take the following steps:

  1. Select on this page your current situation.
    By clicking on one of the situations, the scholarship overview that applies to you will be shown;
  2. All the basic requirements of the scholarship are mentioned in the table of the scholarship overview page. Check for country and region eligibility, study level and faculty specific information;
  3. Click on one of the scholarships for more details;
  4. To apply, follow the given application instructions.

You can find information on scholarships here.

First, select on the Scholarships and grants page if you're a student planning to study at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) or whether you're already studying at EUR and thinking about going on exchange.

After selecting one of these options, you'll land on a page with a scholarship overview applicable to your situation.
