Call for Papers: Friday the 13th… Do you dare?

A mouth covered by a plaster

On Friday the 13th of October 2023, Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil), in collaboration with the OZSW, will organise the Dutch-Flemish Philosophy Day 2023. This year's theme is Taboo and Discomfort in Philosophy. What exactly are taboos; do they still exist? Do you encounter awkward or uneasy truths in your research? Are there unpopular opinions that deserve more recognition? Who crossed the boundaries of conceptual and practical no-go areas in history, or initiated them? And which taboos are worth breaking?

Taboo and Discomfort in Philosophy

In an Erasmian atmosphere of humour, respect and expertise, philosophers will explore their intellectual boundaries during the 41st Dutch-Flemish Philosophy Day on Friday the 13th of October 2023.

Philosophers working in the Netherlands and Flanders, in particular young researchers such as (Research) Master students and PhDs, are very much invited to present their work on this festive day of philosophy.

Besides two keynote speakers on 'Taboo and Discomfort', sessions will be organised with Dutch- and English-language presentations, followed by discussion.

This year's Dutch-Flemish Day of Philosophy will once again feature academic philosophy with a unique twist. Inspired by the increasingly popular 'Science Slam' format, the event emphasizes the fusion of research presentation and storytelling. This format aims to encourage informative, captivating, and clear communication of philosophical ideas. We enthusiastically welcome speakers to venture into new territories, both in terms of content and presentation style. All presentations will be conducted in plenary talks, allowing 10 minutes for the presentation itself and 5 minutes for discussion. The choice of presentation mode is entirely flexible, with no specific requirements regarding the use of slides or other media.

A jury will recognize the presentation that effectively combines a captivating delivery with profound philosophical insight. Additionally, the audience will award a prize to the best presentation.

If you plan to deliver a presentation, kindly submit your abstract (maximum 450 words) in either Dutch or English via email (vanbeurden@esphil.eur.nl) by 1 August 2023. Please include a concise summary of your argument and describe how you intend to present it. Moreover, please complete the participation form provided.

By 12 August, you will be informed whether your proposal will be taken up as part of the programme.
