Campus woudestein in summer

Do you want to study a Master's in Sociology (MSc)?

Rotterdam sociology combines academic depth with a strong orientation towards practice. Here you will learn not only how to analyse complex social issues, but also how, as a sociologist,, how to contribute to solutions. By choosing one of our specialisations, you will develop into a sociologist with a clear substantive profile that matches your interests and ambitions.

Rotterdam sociology: engaged, connected and diverse

The Sociology master programme at the Erasmus University Rotterdam is closely embedded in society. Each specialisation focuses on current social issues such as work, urban issues, migration, inequality, polarisation, and technology. You decide which area you want to explore in greater depth.

In the spirit of the Rotterdam ‘niet lullen, maar poetsen’ (‘no talk, but action’) mentality, you will learn how to translate scientific insights into concrete societal applications. In this way, you develop skills that prepare you for a career in research, policy, governance, consultancy, or social organisations.

The different specialisations, each with their own sociological approach and thematic focus, offer students the opportunity to develop into a specialised sociologist. Through elective courses, students also exchange experiences and insights with one another. Finally, the master programme is characterised by a small-scale and interactive learning environment. You will be actively encouraged to think critically, participate in discussions, and develop your own academic position and professional identity.
