PhD defense L. (Lyudmila) Petrova - Cultural Innovation in transition: a value-based approach

This thesis raises the question of what constitutes the type of change that promotes radical innovation or even a paradigm shift in a knowledge domain and beyond and investigates how (creative) individuals, communities, or even an entire society deal with these changes. One of the limitations of extant theories on culture-led innovation is that they do not account for cultural shifts, and, at best, can only be said to touch upon social shifts. Instead, this thesis seeks to incorporate cultural and social changes as being important signals of qualitative changes.

Consequently, a host of policy-makers have promoted instruments that are geared towards fostering the development of the cultural and creative sectors in order to bring about innovation. The presumption is that creative actions underly and precede innovation.

This thesis is problematizing such causality and argues that it cannot be taken for granted. It raises the question of what constitutes the type of change that promotes radical innovation or even a paradigm shift in a knowledge domain and beyond, and investigates how (creative) individuals, communities, or even an entire society deal with these changes. One of the limitations of extant theories on culture-led innovation is that they do not account for cultural shifts, and, at best, can only be said to touch upon social shifts. Instead this thesis seeks to incorporate cultural and social changes as being important signals of qualitative changes.

The thesis proposes a comprehensive conceptual framework based on Kuhn’s (1962/1996) paradigm shift in a knowledge domain in conjunction with value-based approach (Klamer, 2017) that allows to analyse those cultural and social changes. This framework is tested by applying it to the study different (cultural) valorization practices within the Bulgarian visual arts sector during a historical juncture of 1989 defined by radical political and cultural transformation.
