The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) and the N.W. Posthumus Institute welcome you to the 2022 Annual Conference of the N.W. Posthumus Institute. The theme of the Posthumus Conference 2022 is ‘Humanomics’, a concept that aims to bring human beings, with their emotions, thoughts and culture, back into economics. This year’s keynote Historical Humanomics: A Better Way of Doing Economic History? will be delivered by Professor Deirdre McCloskey, UIC Distinguished Professor of Economics and Professor Emerita of English and of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This year’s edition will be held at and hosted by ESHCC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on 30 June and 1 July 2022.

Humanomics are in part about method, emphasizing the importance of enriching the mathematical tools of economic analysis with approaches from the humanities. But protagonists also have a programmatic agenda. They point out that more attention is required for other drivers of human behaviour than just the maximization of utility. At the N.W. Posthumus Conference the implications for social and economic history take center stage. How can social and economic historians contribute to ‘bettering humanomics’? And can humanomics help us to give new answers to well-known questions in our field, or to raise new ones?
