On 28 April 2022, the symposium Unravelling Media Tourism will be organised by Apoorva Nanjangud and Stijn Reijnders (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication).Â
Goal
This symposium is organised to discuss state-of-the-art research on the relation between popular culture and tourism and will be of interest for both researchers and students.
Topic
This symposium focuses on the relation between tourism and popular culture. International experts will address topics ranging from the representations of travel in cinema, the role of celebrities in boosting certain locations, to the perceptions of authenticity in media theme parks. How do these practices then reinstate new forms of destination identities such as Indianness, or Europeanness? In this symposium, we navigate these different dimensions of the popular culture and tourism nexus. The experts joining us will each deliver a talk on their individual expertise and invite members of the audience to share their insights and experiences.
Invited experts
- Dr. Jane Lovell, Senior Lecturer, Christ Church Business School, Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury, UK

- Dr. Shikha Jhingan, Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies School of Arts and Aesthetics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
