This year the History Department at Erasmus University Rotterdam celebrates its fortieth anniversary. In 1978 the minister of Education gave permission to the Erasmus University to found a program History of Society.
The new History programme was successful and considered quite innovative. The curriculum focused on a social science approach resulting in a multidisciplinary program that gave students a good academic background and an excellent start in society. Notwithstanding the pressure of financial cuts, this approach is still recognizable in our education and research today. It probably is one of the reasons that students highly value our Bachelor and Master programmes. Forty years later we think it is worth to celebrate that on 9 November 2018 with a conference on Nationalism and Protectionism: A Global Historical Approach and with the presentation of the book History @ Erasmus.
