MA Media alumni, Shuai Zhang, nominated for IDleaks Thesis Award

Shuai Zhang, MA Media alumni, is nominated for an IDleaks Thesis Award with his thesis 'Lost in Digital World: Chinese Tourists in Morocco'. The ceremony will take place on Thursday November 29th in CREA Amsterdam. The award ceremony for the best MA thesis written on the representation of the Global South includes Pecha Kucha presentations of the eight nominated students and the screening of Gifts from Babylon.

The event starts at 17:00, followed by a screening of Gifts from Babylon. This is a short narrative film exploring the psychological impact of Africa-EU migration through the lens of a Gambian return-migrant. The film captures the personal conflicts that arise when Modou, a deported refugee, returns to his home country after having lived illegally in Europe for five years. Suffering from intense flashbacks of his illegal migrant journey, he wonders what has become of him.

After the short screening all eight nominated students will give a Pecha Kucha presentation about their Master thesis. After the presentations the award for the best thesis as well as the award for the best Pecha Kucha presentation will be decided by a jury consisting of Wouter Oomen (IDleaks, Universiteit Utrecht), Johannes von Engelhardt (UvA) and Alana Osbourne (UvA).
