City Logistics
Cities grow, traffic increases and e-commerce is exploding. How do we ensure that goods move through the city efficiently and sustainably, without congestion, pollution or chaos? This 2-day masterclass covers it all.
Do you want to shape the city of tomorrow together with fellow professionals in the field of city logistics? Sign up now for this 2-day Masterclass!
The Masterclass City Logistics bridges education and practice and is aimed at policymakers, for example at municipalities, real estate developers, researchers and other professionals. By combining inspiring lectures and knowledge-sharing with peers over two days with a visit to innovative projects in Brussels, this masterclass quickly takes you to the next level.
Day 1:
Inspiring lectures at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Experts in the field of city logistics deliver several interactive lectures on the societal trends currently putting so much pressure on city logistics, changes in the basic elements of city logistics — such as vehicles and transhipment locations, and recent design, business and policy solutions in city logistics. With contributions from, among others, Dr. Bram Kin (HAN), Dr. Hans Quak (BUAS) and Dr. Merten Nefs (EUR). We also draw on a broad network of researchers, organisations and practice partners to compile an inspiring reading list. Before heading to Brussels at the end of the afternoon, you will receive an assignment.
Day 2:
We are in Brussels to visit a number of relevant examples, such as different types of hubs, curbside solutions and mixed-use area developments. In Brussels we will speak with researcher Claire Schelfhout from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and at the end of the programme there is time for group reflection.

Quickscan: knowledge needs in city logistics
Cities are increasingly faced with complex challenges in city logistics due to the introduction of zero-emission zones, densification and new forms of service delivery. This multidisciplinary issue is developing rapidly and encompasses, among other things, spatial planning, mobility and economics. At municipalities, developers and consultants, for example, there appears to be considerable demand for knowledge and exchange, both conceptual and in the form of practical examples.
In a survey and a number of interviews conducted in 2025, we took a closer look at where this demand for knowledge lies. Lack of space, congestion in cities and charging infrastructure are seen as the three most important challenges; alongside these, nuisance from logistics, the design of public space and security of supply for businesses.
Most relevant for the parties involved is gaining knowledge about inspiring project examples of sustainable city logistics, and about policy strategies and measures around city logistics. Most participants showed interest in interactive forms of blended learning, such as exchange within a community of practice in combination with lectures and online study materials. This 2-day Masterclass City Logistics has been designed on the basis of these preferences.
