Biography
Dr. I. (Yannis) Kerkemezos is a senior researcher specialised in strategy and transport economics, with a focus on competition and air transport. His research looks at how competition, pricing and market power develop in airline markets, and how regulation and public policy shape firm behaviour and welfare outcomes. His academic work uses empirical methods to analyse price asymmetries, capacity expansion, strategic scheduling and dynamic pricing in airline markets, and to examine how changes in market structure – such as new entry, consolidation and firm exits – affect prices and welfare. Alongside this, he contributes to policy-oriented work on competition, airline and airport strategy, and aviation regulation. Before joining Erasmus UPT, Yannis worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE), an economist at the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), and a researcher at the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB). Across these roles, he contributed to projects on innovation policy, technology adoption, changing skill needs and their effects on productivity and labour-market outcomes, evaluation of policy instruments, and strategic outlooks on the airline sector and the competitive position of Dutch airports. Yannis also has extensive experience in education, educational management and innovation, including curriculum and course development with a strong focus on competency-based assessment, impact learning, and blended approaches that strengthen student engagement and learning outcomes. He is currently coordinator and lecturer of the MSc course Air Transport Economics at ESE, and designs and delivers Masterclasses in the field of aviation. Main Research Areas / Expertise
