How did the lives of six economists shape international development in its formative years? Leitner International Interdisciplinary Professor of History David Engerman revisits the history of international development, showing the ways in which it was as much a project of the Global South as the Global North. In the presentation and panel discussion, we will consider how the history of development continues to influence practices and policies and how the system is impacted by the current challenges faced by multilateralism.

By using the lives and work of Six South Asian who completed the Economics Tripos at Cambridge in the mid-1950s, Engerman recounts the history of development over their long careers. The six include Amartya Sen, Jagdish Bhagwati, Manmohan Singh, Mahbub Ul Haq, Rehman Sobhan, and Lal Jayawardene. His book draws on 90+ interviews as well as archival materials from ten countries and explores the wide-ranging struggle to solve the problems of poverty and inequality. Taken together, the six apostles show just how much the Global South shaped the enterprise of development.

The event will take place in the Innovation Lab, on the Polak Ground Floor. After the event, drinks will be served.
