The evening centers on a screening of Sorry to Bother You (2018), a bold and darkly humorous film about a telemarketer who discovers he can succeed at work by using his “white voice,” while his coworkers begin organising for better conditions. What starts as a story about ambition quickly turns into a surreal and biting critique of the entanglement of race and labour. The film is both hilarious and sharp, blending absurdity and satire with moments that push beyond realism.
Before the screening, Dr. Dan Hassler-Forest, a media scholar and cultural theorist from Utrecht University, will introduce the film. His introduction will focus on how popular culture and media shape societal debates, point to key elements to look for, and connect the film to broader discussions around labour and race.
After the screening, dinner will be served and the bar will be open. This is a moment to stay, talk, and spend time together in an informal setting.

Organisation
This event is organised together with Dispositif, a travelling film club that aims to make cinema-going more communal by creating accessible, open spaces for discussion and pairing screenings with food. The initiative is co-led by ESHCC alumna Varvara Porechenkova (IBCoM 2021).
This is a great opportunity for ESHCC alumni to get together, while also being partially open to other guests, creating space to reconnect and meet people from different backgrounds.
Food will be vegetarian. For allergies or dietary preferences, please send an email to: alumni@eshcc.eur.nl before 6 May.
