Nose of Nietzsche

Niels van Poecke will be one of the speakers for the next Odorama by Mediamatic about Happiness on Thursday night 24 June. In this diverse evening with lectures and many scents to smell, you will take a closer look at happiness, inevitable sadness and the smells that connect to these emotions. How does smell affect or even cause these feelings?

In his lecture, Niels van Poecke will be making scents of Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche by looking into the role of odor in Nietzsche’s philosophy. Also, he will be using Nietzsche’s nose to reflect on the status of smell in Ancient Greek drama (tragedy). Doing so, he will try to describe the current health crisis as a tragedy from which many odors are ascending. What we can learn from those odors as ‘truth tellers’ now that we are experiencing the crisis through the lens of the media, hiding many things from plain sight?

Odorama
Odorama is an event organized by Mediamatic at which you actively engage with your senses and explore everything that reaches and effects the nose. Odorama will consider olfactory history and design that is experimental and challenging and introduce you to the fragrance as a work of art in itself.

Odorama 43: happiness will be curated by artist Frank Bloem, who uses scent as his primary medium. Other speakers this evening are visual Artist Pavel van Houten and cheesemaker Mathilde van Otterloo. You can follow the lecture via a livestream. You will get a sample kit with smells delivered to your home. So you can smell along with the lectures from your couch.
