Exceptional (family) circumstances

Tinbergen gebouw

For whom?

The university provides financial support from the Student Support Fund to students who, due to certain personal circumstances, have suffered a study delay during the nominal duration of their studies. These personal circumstances include:

  • Illness;
  • Pregnancy and childbirth;
  • Physical, sensory or other functional disabilities;
  • Special family circumstances (e.g. informal care);
  • Insufficient feasibility of programme completion;
  • Be enrolled in a program that has not been re-accredited and for which a degree has not yet been awarded.

Period of entitlement to support

The period in which force majeure leads to entitlement to support is the period of the basic grant (for Dutch students and other EEA students entitled to student finance) or the nominal study duration (for non-EEA students).

Amount of support

  • The financial support is expressed in a number of months, with a fixed monthly amount. This number is equal to the number of months of study delay. You will therefore be paid per month.
  • Students who receive a supplementary grant from DUO receive additional support on top of the fixed monthly amount. This monthly amount is equal to the supplementary grant from DUO.

Payment

  • The financial support is determined for a number of months (maximum 12 months for the entire study period). You will therefore be paid per month. The payment starts after the nominal duration of your studies and lasts for a maximum of 12 months.
  • You will only receive the financial support if you are enrolled as a full-time student at Erasmus University Rotterdam during those months of payment. If you graduate, the remaining months of financial support will not be paid.

Application procedure

  1. To apply for financial support, you (or an agent) must report the delay to a student counsellor. Make an appointment for this via the website.
  2. You will receive a form from the student counsellor with which you can submit the application;
  3. The applications are assessed by the Student Support Committee (mandated by the Executive Board). The Student Support Committee assesses the extent to which the special circumstance leads to study delay and for how many months of financial support you are eligible. In doing so, the Commission must take into account the link between the particular circumstance and the educational programming. The Commission shall record its decision in the form of a decision, against which the usual objection and appeal procedure may be taken.
