The article presents BWDAT, a non-intrusive, flexible and low-cost analytical research software that facilitates a holistic study of viewing experiences on VOD platforms in uncontrolled environments (e.g., at home). More precisely, BWDAT was developed to allow the collection of three types of data: users’ physiological data gathered from a smartwatch, users’ interactions from video-on-demand interfaces, and self-reported data. This open-access tool offers the possibility to generate automatic data analysis reports, facilitating researchers’ data analysis tasks.

BWDAT was developed by MSc. José A. Cordeiro (Universidade de Lisboa) and conceptualized by dr. Deborah Castro (Erasmus University Rotterdam & ITI-LARSyS), dr. Valentina Nisi and prof. dr. Nuno Nunes (Universidade de Lisboa & ITI-LARSyS). BWDAT was successfully used by a group of researchers from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) to study binge-watching.

The publication is open-access and can be found on ScienceDirect.
