Dr Mark Edward Hay appointed Research Fellow in Residence at the University of Bonn

Historian Dr Mark Edward Hay, based at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC), has been appointed Research Fellow in Residence at the Center for Advanced Studies on “Finance & Inequality” at the University of Bonn.

The centre, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), explores the relationship between the evolution of financial systems and social and economic inequalities.

During his fellowship, Dr Hay will examine the internationalisation of Amsterdam’s financial networks in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His research will focus on the migration of these networks to London, and how London adapted the efficient Dutch practices of capital mobilisation for the purposes of empire building.

This appointment highlights the international recognition of ESHCC’s researchers and their contribution to ongoing academic debates on the historical roots of financial systems and inequality.
