On Tuesday 13 May, ESHCC welcomed alumni, colleagues and students of all three departments for an inspiring afternoon dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the cultural sector and media landscape.
After opening remarks by Vice Dean of Education Tonny Krijnen, in which she demonstrated how the event’s theme – diversity and inclusion – is represented in the work across all three departments, History alumnus Samir Azrioual delivered his keynote.
Samir works as Managing Director at Cineville, a European unlimited arthouse film pass with over 140.000 members, and available in five countries. Cineville aims to strengthen the European arthouse cinemas via collaboration and innovation. Through its subscription model, they manage to attract new and younger audiences.
In his presentation, Samir showed how Cineville contributes to a diverse and inclusive cinema; not only because the platform strengthens the sector, but also because they promote their love for film. How they do so? By highlighting smaller titles from all over the world, avoiding jargon & elitist language to make sure there’s no entry barrier or intimidation and through positive recommendations only.
After the Q&A, participants discussed the impact of entertainment media on audiences, found out how museums and cultural institutions seek to increase diversity in their collections and exhibitions, or gained insights in fellow alumni’s experiences and challenges regarding inclusive audience engagement in three deep-dive sessions.
The event concluded with informal networking drinks, offering alumni, students and colleagues the chance to (re)connect, exchange views and perspectives, and explore new collaborations.
