Who is the most promising Science talent of the Netherlands and Flanders? Dr. Julian Schaap (1988), Sociology of Music at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, is one on the 15 researchers nominated for the New Scientist Science Talent Award 2021. This annual election offers young scientists a platform to showcase their research to the public.

The role of music in social interactions
It is often said that music brings people together. But it also drives people apart. Julian Schaap researches the role of music in social interactions, for example by examining how background characteristics such as class, gender or race/ethnicity affect the development of musical taste and what music can mean to people. Since the outbreak of Covid19, he has focused his research on understanding how the production and consumption of music can lead to improved feelings of wellbeing and solidarity in times of physical distance.
Julian is constantly trying to build a bridge between science and society. He hopes that his research will enable people to see the broader perspective of their taste preferences and, therefore, their feelings of closeness and distance from others.
Julian Schaap:"My main motivation is to understand how there is more to our everyday relationship with music than meets the eye. Music can literally 'save' some people, while it leaves others completely cold."
