Recently a number of PhD candidates joined the ESHCC Faculty. In this series we would like to introduce them to you, starting with Yongjian Li. Under the supervision of Dr Amanda Alencar and Professor Susanne Janssen, Yongjian is working on the project “Media and Migration in China”, supported by the China Scholarship Council.

Within the research project, Yongjian is investigating the mechanisms and patterns of internal migration in China as well as the interaction among media, migration and governance.

Before joining the ESHCC, Yongjian received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration (’16) from Wuhan University, China. He continued his academic career at Renmin University of China (RUC), where he received a Research Master of Arts Degree in Educational Management and Policy (‘18). Being a visiting research fellow at the University of Helsinki, Finland during 2017-2018, Yongjian conducted research projects on critical and intercultural juxtaposition of Chinese and Finnish education systems and worked as a guest lecturer at the University’s summer school programme.

Combining Yongjian’s background and interests in public policy and intercultural education with the expertise of Dr Amanda Alencar and Professor Susanne Janssen in Migration and Media studies, he hopes to make a meaningful contribution to scholarship in these fields.

Outside of academia, Yongjian likes cooking and sharing with others the dishes he makes, such as dumplings and buns. He is also very keen on developing photographic and swimming skills.

When asked about his impressions about Rotterdam and his new positions, Yongjian said the following:

I am very excited to join such an intercultural and interdisciplinary faculty. Everyone is super nice, friendly and supportive. With all the support and love from you all, Rotterdam is like the second home to me, I feel happy and integrated here. And I am sure I will learn a lot with you all and get treasured friendship during my journey here. It is so great to be on board, to get to know you all, and become a member of this wonderful big family.
