Nyota Kanyemesha of ESHCC is one of the two winners of 2022 Lambers Student Excellence Award. The award was presented to Nyota during the 109th Dies Natalis ceremony on Tuesday 8 November. The winners receive a medal and a monetary value of 3,500 euro.

In addition to her outstanding academic performance, Nyota enjoyed appreciation of the jury because of overcoming several obstacles. Also, the jury praises her for doing volunteer work, looking after others and the way she embraces the Erasmian values.

“Nyota is a student full of potential who has a flourishing academic career ahead of her “

Nyota is currently studying in the first year of the Research Master Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. Because of her excellent study results so far, the faculty’s Dean and Vice Dean of Education are confident that she will graduate in the summer of 2023. They mention: “Nyota’s teachers emphasise her bright smile and her willingness to help others. She is engaged, versatile and a true team player. These qualities, along with her academic and research qualities, make Nyota a student full of potential who has a flourishing academic career ahead of her.”

A special edition: two winners

As every year on the Dies Natalis, the Lambers Student Excellence Award will be presented to students who had made an extraordinary educational or research achievement. But the 2022 edition is special: there are two winners. Both Nyota Kanyemesha (ESHCC) and Else Marie van den Herik (ESE and ESL) win the award.

The reason that the Erasmus Trust Fund presents the award to two winners, is a lively discussion among the jury members about grades as indication of academic performance on the one hand, and personal motivation, development, and impact on the other.
