The SDC Conference is an international congress that allows for security practitioners to come together, talk about safety issues, present, and discover solutions, and to showcase European projects for urban security and crime prevention. The conference is organized by the European Forum for Urban Security.

At the 2021 edition, the EUR team attended as research partner of the IcARUS project. IcARUS is an EU-funded project which aims to help local security actors anticipate and better respond to security challenges. The conference represented an opportunity for IcARUS to present its focus and approach, and to distribute material over the project’s action plan and synergies.

Workshop by Massimo Fattori at the SDC Conference

In addition, the EUR team had the chance to lead a workshop session at the SDC Conference on October 21st, titled “Design Thinking: an Experiential Session on an Innovative Approach to Urban Security”. The workshop saw an audience of practitioners successfully engaged in an interactive session. This allowed for the presentation of the Design Thinking approach for urban security and crime prevention – methodology of the IcARUS project. Moreover, practical case studies were discussed with participants and issues were framed together with the audience. While the latter had the task of thinking out of the box for delivering innovative solutions to given plights, the workshop generated a rich discussion on the approach, its feasibility, and its success.

EUR leads the research on methodology and innovative approaches for the IcARUS project, and as such it is responsible for delivering research results and informing security practitioners on alternative ways to conceive public safety.

The workshop at the SDC Conference was inspired by the IcARUS project and organized by Massimo Fattori (PhD candidate at ESHCC), together with colleagues from KEMEA Research Centre (Greece) and from MakeSense (France), all partners to the IcARUS project consortium.
