Students work on digital challenges in migrant communities

Last month, we closed the Media, Technology & Migration master’s course from Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) with our annual Partners in Practice symposium; a powerful reminder of why bridging academia and community matters.

In collaboration with our Translocal Lives partners, students worked on real challenges affecting migrant communities in Rotterdam, including digital integration and inclusion for migrant women, the Dutch government’s digital systems, media advocacy for undocumented migrants in the upcoming municipal elections, and digital surveillance and social media narratives surrounding migration.

For this edition we counted with the participation and support of Re-starter, The BAM Collective, Pauluskerk RotterdamStichting Mano, and Stichting ROS.

Partners in Practice

Partners in Practice is an initiative within the Media, Tech & Migration course at ESHCC, designed to connect students with the real-world impacts of technology on migration. The course invites students to explore how technology empowers and hinders migrants’ lives. Rather than being a solely theoretical exercise grounded in secondary research, students will have the opportunity to leverage the Translocal Lives network of partners to develop their research projects.

Next academic year, this course will continue as “Media, technology and Global Mobilities” as part of the master specialisation Media, Digitalisation & Society.
