The ESHCC incentive gives researchers the ability to write an extensive research proposal to be submitted in an external competition for research funds. This incentive gives Yuri van Hoef (Department of History) the possibility to work on three different research proposals.

The first proposal focuses on the Friendcraft of the Netherlands, as a typical middle power in international politics. The second proposal will consider several middle powers, including the Netherlands, and is proportionally larger. And finally, Yuri will start working on a third research proposal which is still in its infancy. This proposal will look at political friendship in Chinese history.

Yuri: “Why does research in the field of political friendship matter? Studies suggest middle powers possess a unique position in the international system: favouring a politics of compromise, cosmopolitanism, and multilateralism, and they are widely observed to engage in international friendships. Missing from scholarship is a study answering the question how middle powers build and maintain these friendships, which is where my projects comes in. I’m very much looking forward to carrying out the research.”
