6-7 June, 2013, International Conference Tangible Pasts? Questioning Heritage Education
International conference for scholars and professionals about the uses of cultural heritage in museums, schools and digital environments. The conference will be held from 6-7 June in Rotterdam (De Doelen, Jurriaanse Complex) and is co-organized by the research team of the NWO Program Heritage Education and The Netherlands Knowledge Institute for Cultural Education and Amateur Arts (LKCA).

27 April - 1 May, Annual Meeting American Educational Research Association (San Francisco)  
Geerte Savenije delivered the paper "Students’ narratives of slavery heritage and their learning experiences".

22-24 April, PhD Symposium Huizinga Instituut - Research Institute and Graduate School for Cultural History (Hilversum)
Pieter de Bruijn presented his paper "Traces and places of the Holocaust A comparison of English and Dutch heritage educational resources". Geerte Savenije delivered her presentation "Pupils’ narratives of slavery heritage and their learning experiences".

2012

16 October, 2012, CHC Research Group Meeting on Holocaust Education
The October meeting of the research group of the Center for Historical Culture featured papers of two PhD students doing research related to the field of Holocaust education. Marc van Berkel showed how German and Dutch history textbooks deal with the Holocaust (1960-2010), while Pieter de Bruijn focused on how heritage educational resources deal with this topic in the Netherlands and England.
 

11-13 July, 2012, Annual Conference, Centre for Learner Identity Studies
The fourth edition of this annual conference, ook op oude site, organized by the Centre for Learner Identity Studies, Edge Hill University (UK), revolved around the themes identity, state and education. Geerte Savenije presented a paper based on her research of students' entrance narratives and ideas of significance regarding heritage of the transatlantic slave trade.

21 June, 2012, Cultuurnetwerk Conference on Cultural Education
This annual conference, organized by Cultuurnetwerk Nederland, aims to provide a platform for researchers in the fields of art- and cultural education to present and discuss their work. This year the conference was co-organized with Erasmus University Rotterdam. Carla van Boxtel had convened a symposium on meaningful learning in the context of heritage-, media and art education. In this session, Geerte Savenije presented some results of her case study on slavery heritage.

7 June, 2012, Study day Cultural Education
This year's 'day for Cultural Education' focused on 'collaboration'. Three keynotes and various sessions explored different forms of collaboration between the educational sector, cultural institutions and welfare organizations. Together with Gundy van Dijck, Stephan Klein delivered a workshop on the NWO Valorization-project Dynamic Heritage Education. The day was organized by Cultuurnetwerk Nederland, in cooperation with CANON Cultuurcel Vlaanderen and the Flemish Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Media.

24 May, 2012, Research meeting Center for Historical Culture
Geerte Savenije presented a paper on her research at a meeting of the Center for Historical Culture, Erasmus University Rotterdam. In her paper, entitled 'How could someone possibly do this and not feel bad?' Students' narratives about slavery history and heritage she discussed part of the results of her case study on the transatlantic slave trade, focussing on the entrance narratives of school students.

30 March, 2012,  Royal Netherlands Historical Society Spring Congress
This congress, which was co-organized with the Dutch Association of Teachers of History and Civics, aimed to relate recent insights and problems from 'global history' to issues that teachers encounter in their 'global classrooms'. Together with two history teachers Stephan Klein organized a workshop on memory cultures and identity. Maria Grever acted as chair person.

16-17 February, 2012, Geschichtsdidaktik Empirisch 12
The School of Teacher Education of the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz in Basel, Switzerland organized a conference on empirical research in the realm of history didactics. In their keynote Maria Grever and Carla van Boxtel discussed developments in empirical research on history didactics in The Netherlands. Pieter de Bruijn and Stephan Klein presented a paper based on research from their case studies on World War II.

2011

6 December, 2011, Workshop Meeting Ministry of Education, Culture and Science
During this meeting of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Stephan Klein delivered a workshop entitled 'Heritage education: shared historical knowledge in a world divided'. This meeting was intended to inform government officials on results from research.
 

23 November, 2011, 'Heritage arena' on defining heritage education
The Netherlands Institute for Heritage and the Reinwardt Academy organized this meeting in Amsterdam focusing on the question 'What is the definition of heritage education?'. Carla van Boxtel gave a talk on what can be considered as heritage education.

18 November, 2011, International Master Class Heritage Education
The main theme of this master class was the meaning of heritage for youngsters in a globalizing and multicultural society. It was co-organized by The Netherlands Institute for Heritage and held at De Bazel in Amsterdam. During the morning programme several international experts delivered a lecture revolving around the themes of heritage and education. The afternoon program featured workshops on 'identity and meaning-making' and 'learning through experience'.
This master class was intended for education officers of heritage institutions, developers of educational resources who work for heritage institutions and regional heritage consultants. Participants received the publication Heritage education. Challenges in dealing with the past with contributions by the experts and the research team.This publication is now available in the webshop of The Netherlands Institute for Heritage.

16-21 September, 2011, ICOM-CECA Conference 2011
'Quality criteria for museum education' was the theme for this year's ICOM CECA conference. The conference focused on the meaning of 'good' museum education and how may it may be. Both Geerte Savenije and Pieter de Bruijn presented a paper, drawing from their case-studies on the transatlantic slave trade. While Savenije focused on the perspectives and learning experiences of school students, De Bruijn discussed the concept of multiperspectivity in museums' educational resources.

August 29 - September 3, 2011, EARLI and JURE Conference 2011
This year, the 14th Biennial Conference of EARLI and JURE was held in Exeter, England. Both conferences focused on research in the areas of learning and education. One of the keynotes was delivered by Carla van Boxtel and Jannet van DrieHistorical reasoning in the classroom. A domain-specific approach to learning and instruction. Geerte Savenije presented the first results of her case-study on slavery in a poster session.

May 9, 2011, Study day Migrating memory / Memories of migration
Norah Karrouche (PhD student) organized a study day that revolved around the theme of memory cultures and heritage practices of migration in the Low countries. This meeting was held at Erasmus University. Geerte Savenije presented a paper, entitled Learning about slavery heritage in multicultural classrooms: negotiation and transformation of students' entrance narratives and their ideas on significanceMaria Grever delivered the closing lecture.

March 28, 2011, Annual study day for Dutch history teachers
This year this training day was held in Groningen. Geerte Savenije delivered a workshop on entrance narratives of school students. She focused on the question how teachers can stimulate their students to voice and share these narratives and how they may be enriched with a plurality of perspectives.

March 17, 2011, Symposium on Historiana by Steven Stegers and Pieter de Bruijn
The Center for Historical Culture organized a research meeting where Steven Stegers MA (EUROCLIO) gave a presentation about the online program Historiana, People on the move - Rights & Responsibilities. Historiana is an initiative of EUROCLIO and The Netherlands Institute for Heritage. The project entails the development of an 'online, interactive multimedia tool on the learning and teaching of common themes in history and heritage'. Co-referent was Pieter de Bruijn, Does every shoe fit? Multiperspectivity in heritage education. See the invitation for more practical information.

February 3, 2011, Discussion Cultuur in de Spiegel
Since it started two years ago, the Dutch research project Cultuur in de Spiegel ('Culture in the mirror') has been much discussed. The theoretical framework of this project has been well received, but also raised some critical questions. Together with the project team of Cultuur in de Spiegel, Cultuurnetwerk Nederland organized a discussion meeting that focused on the question how this theoretical framework could be of use for educational practice. Carla van Boxtel was asked to prepare a commentary for this meeting. The discussion was broadcast live through webcast. Afterwards, this video was made available on the website of Cultuur in de Spiegel.

January 20, 2011, Symposium youth and monuments
"Respect, this building has seen more than you have" is the title of this symposium, which took place in Amsterdam. It focused on the question how young people may be encouraged to engage with monuments. The symposium was organized by the 'Onze Schatten' foundation ('Our Treasures'). Carla van Boxtel delivered a paper entitled Erfgoededucatie in Nederland: wat wordt eigenlijk geleerd?, in which she explored potential learning outcomes of Dutch heritage education practices.

2010

December 7 and 8, Digital Heritage Conference
December 8th, Carla van Boxtel, Ruben Smit (Reinwardt Academy) and Geerte Savenije organized a workshop on the sixth edition of the Digital Heritage Conference in Rotterdam. This conference is an initiative of the The Netherlands Institute for Heritage and the DEN Foundation (the Dutch national ICT knowledge center for cultural heritage). This year the focus of the conference lay on digital developments in heritage and education. For presentations see the conference website.
 

November 11-14, International Training Seminar EUROCLIO Historiana
Last November in the Hague, EUROCLIO organized a first seminar on their Historiana project. Maria Grever and Pieter de Bruijn both attended this seminar, which focused on the teaching of European history and European heritage from multiple perspectives. October 2010, Publication in magazine history teachers association
Last year, the October issue of Kleio, the magazine of the Dutch association for teachers of history and civics, featured an article by Carla van Boxtel, Pieter de Bruijn, Maria Grever, Stephan Klein and Geerte Savenije. In the article, entitled 'Dicht bij het verleden. Wat kunnen erfgoedlessen bijdragen aan het leren van geschiedenis?', we theoretically explore heritage and heritage education, focusing on the potential value and limits for history teaching.

October 28-30, International Seminar Understanding history and the construction of identities in a global world
During an international seminar in Madrid, Maria Grever presented her paper 'Communality and Plurality. Reflections on history and heritage education in a globalizing society'. This seminar, which goes under the full title Understanding history and the construction of identities in a global world: de-nationalizing history teaching?, was organized by Mario Carretero of the Autónoma University Madrid. 

September 2 and 3, EARLI SIG10 & 21 conference
Geerte Savenije presented a poster at the international conference Moving through cultures of learning, organized by the Special Interest Groups 10 'Social interaction in learning and instruction' and 21 'Learning and teaching in culturally diverse settings' of the European Association for Learning and Instruction (EARLI). Savenije also participated in a JURE (JUnior REsearchers) session to discuss the methodological design of her study.

August 22-28, 21st International Congress of Historical Sciences
Last August, historians from all over the world came together in Amsterdam to participate in the 21st International Congress of Historical Sciences, which takes place every five years. Together with Peter Seixas (Professor and Canada Research Chair in Education, University of British Columbia, Vancouver), Maria Grever had organized a session entitled Historical consciousness and cultural identities in a globalising world. Changing roles of school history?. As contributors to this panel Maria Grever and Carla van Boxtel discussed heritage education in the context of historical consciousness and history teaching in globalizing societies.
Stephan Klein presented a paper in the panel The present as challenge to the teaching of history, organized by Kaat Wils (associate professor in history didactics and European cultural history, K.U. Leuven). Klein discussed some preliminary results of his research on the perception of heritage and heritage education by history teachers and heritage educators.

August 18-20, International Conference K.U. Leuven
At the International Conference Longing for the present: the history of history education and the temptations of modernity (1600-2000), hosted by the K.U. Leuven, Maria Grever delivered a lecture on the ideas of presentism and historical distance in relation to heritage education.
PhD students Pieter de Bruijn and Geerte Savenije presented posters on their research to an audience consisting of historians and history education experts.

April 22, NWO Research Workshop on Transatlantic Slave Trade
Together with the Royal Tropical Institute the Center for Historical Culture organized a research workshop entitled Heritage education and the Atlantic Slave Trade [alleen pdf oude url beschikbaar 25/9]. After a guided tour through a temporary exhibition on Maroon culture at the Tropenmuseum, Stephan Klein (postdoc NWO Program Heritage Education) and Ruth Fisher (Learning project manager Understanding Slavery Initiative) delivered papers related to heritage education and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

March 22-28, EUROCLIO Conference for history teachers
This year the annual conference of the European Association of History Educators (EUROCLIO) was held in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The theme of this conference, which is primarily intended for history educators, was described as A bridge too far? Teaching common European history. Themes, perspectives and levels. Carla van Boxtel and Maria Grever, program leaders of our NWO research on heritage education, both presented a paper. Van Boxtel and Grever respectively focused on the potential of heritage for history education and the tensions between commonality and plurality in multicultural history classrooms.

2009

December 1, NWO Research Workshop on World War II memory
Geerte Savenije and Pieter de Bruijn presented a paper on their research in relation to the heritage of the Second World War at a research workshop organized by the Center for Historical Culture and The Netherlands Institute for War Documentation. This workshop, entitled Heritage education and the dynamics of World War II memory, was concluded by a presentation of history teacher trainer Terry Haydn who reflected on ideas of heritage education and history teaching in the UK.
 

September 2, Symposium on aims and evaluation of heritage education
The Netherlands Institute for Heritage, Cultuurnetwerk Nederland and Erasmus University collectively organized the symposium Aims and evaluation of heritage education: interaction between practice and research. Carla van Boxtel delivered a lecture at this meeting on the aims of heritage education in relation to history learning.
