Bram Belder is an external PhD-candidate who researches the 185-year history of the Van der Giessen shipyard. More specifically he analyses the measures and initiatives management and shareholders took to be able, contrary to a large number of other shipyards, to continue their shipbuilding activities. The research includes the effects of the yard being a family business and those of the extensive government support.

In the beginning of his career Bram Belder was a marine engineer which brought him all over the world. Following this he worked in various technical and management functions that necessitated again extensive worldwide travelling. During this period, he wrote a number of books and articles about the maritime history of his hometown, Alblasserdam. After his retirement in 2018 he obtained a year later his Master’s degree in Colonial and Global History at the Leiden University.

His main interests include maritime history, shipbuilding and marine engineering.
