After a career of some decades in Dutch maritime museums, Frits Loomeijer (1953) is an external PhD-candidate who researches the Dutch fishing industry in the 20th century. He focuses on the economic history of the industry in its international context. Technology, entrepreneurship and the involvement of the government are key factors.

Frits Loomeijer holds a master degree in Social and Economic History at Groningen University (1980). Before entering the museum world, he worked as an independent journalist / photographer and part time North Sea fisherman. Over the years he served several managerial positions in maritime, museum and academic networks.

His main research interests are small-scale shipping, shipbuilding and maritime heritage. 

In 2021, together with Joke Korteweg, he published Won from the waves. The Duch offshore industry. (Amsterdam, Balans publishers, 2021). From 1980 onwards a dozen books and numerous articles by his hand have been published in Dutch maritime trade magazines and international academic journals.
