Since 2019, Richard Velthuizen has been conducting doctoral research on modern Dutch shipbuilding after 1983. The key word is collaboration, which shipbuilding companies have gradually come to understand as an absolute necessity for international competitiveness.
He combines his PhD research with freelance work at the intersection of art, culture and craft. He also volunteers for the maintenance and public information of the world's last working grain elevator, moored in the museum harbor of the Maritime Museum Rotterdam. He has written a number of articles for the book Stadsgraanzuiger no19. De redding van een havenicoon (2023), which was published after the completion of a major renovation of this maritime vacuum cleaner.
Richard Velthuizen has a master degree in Early Modern Intellectual History from Erasmus University Rotterdam (2011), after years of experience in the import and export of cut flowers.
