Designing Assignments in the Age of AI

Two people on their laptops in the event room of the Education Lab.

Introduction

We hope this module can help EUR educators effectively integrate LLMs into their courses, irrespectively of their discipline. We would like to help you create assignments that are engaging, meaningful, promote critical thinking, creativity, and a deepening understanding of the subject matter. Particularly, the focus of this module is on helping you think about your own courses, learning objectives (LOs) and assignments. How to change LOs? What types of assignments are available? How to handle plagiarism checks? Should you adapt your rubrics?

What will you achieve?

  • Effectively integrating LLMs into your course
  • Learning to create assignments that are engaging, meaningful, promote critical thinking, creativity, and a deepening understanding of the subject matter.

Context and target group

As part of their offer for the professional development of teachers, the Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) developed three online learning modules for EUR teachers. These modules have been developed in collaboration with EUR lecturers, didactic and AI experts. You can complete the online learning modules at your own pace at your own time. They can also be used to complement or deepen the Microlab 'How to use AI as a teacher (for beginners)' but can also be followed separately. The modules were made possible in part by an EU grant via Npuls

Content, form and time investment

This is a free-standing online module for teachers at EUR. You are invited to read, watch, and participate as much as you find helpful for your teaching. Your level of engagement is determined by you. You may choose to do any number of the six available assignments. Some assignments can be completed immediately, others might require you to reflect. Be sure to take the time to engage in these reflective tasks. Do check them sequentially, though and whichever assessment you decide to do, please contribute your results and insights! We expect that teachers will get inspired by each other's ideas and experiences and that adding your own to this module will help create a learning resource for future participants. We heartily encourage you to contribute to this collegial discourse by engaging with other responses!

We expect the module to take about 4h of time, distributed in about two weeks.
