Erasmus Education Research

The Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) stimulates research about educational innovation, with the goal to make these projects more evidence informed. Think about research themes like: effectivity of serious games and apps, effectivity of (peer) feedback, and programme redesign.

CLI Fellowships

The CLI offers EUR lecturers the opportunity to apply for a fellowship. With a fellowship, you can spend 0.2 FTE every week on researching educational innovation or working on an educational project.

EER Datase

In the Erasmus Education Research (EER) database you can find a broad selection of educational data. Access to these data can be requested by EUR researchers.

About the EER database

Study data: a broad concept. But what is it and what can you do with it? Study data includes a collection of information about various aspects of education. Consider, for example, a study advisor interested in the study progress of her students; a teacher contemplating the organisation of his courses; or a program director who wants to assess the quality of programs at the faculty.

Using study data 

The characteristics of research data and the specific purposes for its use vary for all users. However, they all share a common goal: improving the quality of education. Since 2015, EUR has been collaborating with a working group of educational researchers to establish the Erasmus Education Research (EER) database, consisting of a wide selection of educational data. The aim is to consolidate available data in the field of educational research at EUR and make it accessible to EUR researchers.

The added value of a EUR-wide database is characterized by transparent and clearly defined definitions, allowing researchers to use the data in a consistent manner. Additionally, it is advantageous for researchers to utilise available data because the collection, linking, and verification of information regarding students' prior education and study progress has already been meticulously conducted.

Academic Advisory Committee EER

The Academic Advisory Committee EER looks into new developments and improvement opportunities for educational research within EUR.

Academic Advisory Committee EER

Educational research contributes to a learning culture, an important theme within higher education that is also promoted by Npuls and NKO (formerly NRO). To strengthen this, the Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) established the Academic Advisory Committee EER at the end of 2023. This committee, in which all faculties are represented, explores new and improvement opportunities for educational research within Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

Research agenda

The CLI has been facilitating a Research Agenda for educational innovation for many years, with the CLI providing matching for doctoral research. Currently, there is still one teacher/researcher active through this arrangement. The advisory committee will engage in discussions with the mid-management of EUR to explore a possible continuation of the Research Agenda.

EER database

Educational researchers have access to valuable data about studying at EUR through the EER database, managed by the Data Competence Hub (DCH).

What does the advisory committee do in this area?

  • Advising on the accessibility and use of the EER database.
  • Collaborating with researchers on issues related to the database.
  • Advising DCH as the direct academic interlocutor for educational data.
  • Contributing to the definition of educational data, for example by stating and cataloging different definitions.

Community and communication

Educational researchers are invited by the CLI to participate in or speak at events about various educational developments. CLI fellows, who focus on short-term educational research, meet regularly to share knowledge and encourage cross-pollination. Additionally, the CLI aims to more actively involve Comenius fellows in the EER community.

Educational research also receives attention through the CLI website, where relevant projects and results are highlighted. Moreover, educational researchers are invited to a Teams environment, allowing them to easily find each other and collaborate.

Collaboration and funding

The advisory committee collaborates with ERS to explore opportunities for joining national and international partnerships of research projects in the field of educational innovation. Finding funding opportunities for educational research remains a challenge, but the CLI and the academic advisory committee, with support from ERS, are actively committed to this. They highlight opportunities to organisations such as NKO (formerly NRO) and Npuls, and also explore possibilities for international grants.
