The transition to university is intense for many students: new expectations, an unfamiliar environment and the search for a sense of belonging. In this presentation, we will share the findings of a large-scale evaluation of the ESSB CONNECT mentorprogram at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). This program pairs new students with second-year students and combines practical, social and academic support. But did it actually work?

Through a longitudinal study (2023–2024), we will demonstrate the impact of participating in CONNECT on student well-being, sense of belonging, academic self-confidence, and study progress. You will gain insight into how mentoring helps students feel at home at the university, cope with academic stress and stay committed to their future goals. A particular focus is on the impact on students with a migration background and on students from lower-SES groups.

What can you expect?

  • In-depth insights into the three pillars of CONNECT: practical, social and academic support.
  • Research findings that show where mentoring makes a difference (and where there is still room for improvement).
  • Practical lessons for educational professionals, policymakers and mentors on designing effective support programs.
  • Inspiration on how peer support can contribute to inclusion, well-being, and study success in higher education.

This presentation is relevant to anyone working in student support, education (innovation and management) and well-being.
