With his research project, Floris Kervers (ESSB) aims to gain a deeper understanding of and improve the design of online learning activities in higher education. In recent years, higher education has seen a transformation from traditional campus-based teaching with in-person learning activities like lectures or workgroups to online learning activities (e.g., knowledge clips) where students can learn autonomously at any location or time. In this relatively new form of education, it remains challenging to ensure sufficient active learning. To combat passive learning, teachers can implement online learning activities which engage the student through, for example, student collaboration or interactive learning material such as videos with embedded questions. The aim of this project is to develop a better understanding of how the design of online learning materials and/or activities can be optimized to ensure active learning.
