To further stimulate and reward PhD research, the Graduate School invites its PhD candidates and recent graduates to submit their work and nominate their colleagues and supervisors for the "Graduate School Awards for PhD Excellence". 

The submission pages are open from Thursday 23 November 2023 until Friday 19 January 2024.

Deadline for submissions: Friday 19 January 2024


To further stimulate and reward PhD research, the Graduate School invites its PhD candidates and recent graduates to submit their work and nominate their colleagues and supervisors for the "Graduate School Awards for PhD Excellence". 

The submission pages are open from Thursday 23 November 2023 until Friday 19 January 2024.

Winners receive a prize* and a certificate honouring their achievement. The winners will be announced during our award ceremony on Thursday 28 March 2024.

Categories

We welcome submissions for the following categories:

  • ​​Best ​​​​​poster presentation
  • Best article or chapter in an edited volume
  • Best PhD thesis
  • Best EGSH lecturer
  • Best PhD supervisor
  • Best societal impact by a PhD candidate
  • Best PhD colleague

Eligible faculties/institutes

You are eligible for submission or nomination when you are part of one of the Graduate School's faculties:

  • Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT)
  • Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM)
  • Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) 
  • Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil)
  • Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB)
  • Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS)
  • International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)

Submission criteria

Your submission must be:

  • Independent or first author PhD work by a Graduate School PhD candidate; 
    • (In other words, your doctoral supervisor (Dutch: promotor) must be associated with one of the above listed faculties/institutes.)
  • Presented or published in 2023;
  • Written or held in the English language;
    • (Except for the category 'Best societal impact'. This can include media performance in both Dutch and English language media outlets.)

And, bear in mind, that:

  • A distinct piece of research can only be submitted in one category. 
    • (in other words, candidates cannot submit an article and conference paper that basically report the same research.) 
  • You can also only submit one piece of work per category (or nominate one person in the case of the nomination categories).
    • However, you can submit several distinctive pieces of work in different categories.

Best poster presentation
  • Created in 2023
  • Clarity of information
  • Visual design
  • Capturing attention
  • Demonstrates multidisciplinarity

Prize: 100 euro

Best article or chapter in an edited volume
  • Published in 2023
  • Containing basic academic ingredients: abstract, research question, and a consistent report of data, literature or conceptual reflection
  • Well written
  • Convincing and openness discussion of contribution to the field
  • Quality and character of the journal 
  • Demonstrates multidisciplinarity

Prize: 150 euro

Best PhD thesis
  • Finished within 5 years, excluding maternal, paternal or other care leave
  • Submitted to committee in 2023
  • Well written
  • Clear contribution to the field
  • Wide grasp of the field and the literature about it
  • Diversity and clarity of methods and/or conceptual reflections
  • Demonstrates multidisciplinarity

Prize: 500 euro

Best societal impact by a PhD candidate

Please submit an overview of your societal impact in 2023. The overview should include one or more of the following dimensions:

  • Societal profile description: the project or initiative is based on research activities but is demonstrably linked to societal partners and practices. The activities represent societal responsibility and are recognised and supported by the stakeholders.
  • Impact level, media and results: the project or initiative represents an important societal intervention and results in different points of view, notions or actions in relation to a societal issue.
  • Innovations: the project or initiative brings together research/teaching and societal partners and practices in an innovative, contemporary or remarkable manner.

  • Presented qualities in 2023
  • Clear presentation style
  • Opportunity to interact
  • Quality of course content
  • You can only nominate one lecturer
  • Dr. Fadi Hirzalla and prof.dr. Esther Rozendaal are excluded from nomination

Best PhD supervisor
  • Presented qualities in 2023
  • Quality of supervision
  • Regular supervision meetings
  • Opens up network to help PhD candidate
  • You can only nominate one supervisor

Prize: n/a

Best PhD colleague 
  • Presented qualities in 2023
  • Willingness to help out others without direct personal gain 
  • Genuine interest in (work of) colleagues 
  • Demonstrates a supportive team effort 
  • You can only nominate one PhD colleague
  • The nominee must be a PhD candidate (or recent graduate)
