What if the future of a sustainable economy is already taking shape in local workshops?

As the climate crisis deepens, many people wonder whether endless economic growth is compatible with protecting the planet. While this debate often focuses on governments and large companies, another group is already experimenting with a different way of doing business: local craft entrepreneurs.

This research followed sustainable makers in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, from furniture makers to textile designers, to understand how they run businesses that put people, communities and the environment before profit. They repair instead of replace, work with reclaimed materials, produce locally, preserve knowledge and skills and design products made to last. In doing so, they help reduce waste, strengthen neighbourhood economies and encourage more sustainable ways of living.

Yet these businesses are often working against the system. Tax rules, regulations, market and cultural pressures are largely designed for businesses focused on growth and mass production, making it difficult for craft entrepreneurs to compete despite the environmental and social benefits they provide.

The research argues that building a more sustainable economy is not only about developing new technologies. It is also about recognising, supporting and learning from businesses that are already putting sustainable ideas into practice. Policies that reward social and environmental value, remove unnecessary barriers and invest in local entrepreneurship could help these businesses thrive.

By highlighting the experiences of local craft entrepreneurs, this research offers a new perspective on how cities can become more resilient, circular and sustainable.
