Dr. Marc Verboord will publish an article in the edited volume “Asian Culture Flows. Cultural Policies, Creative Industries, and Media Consumers” together with Master Media, Culture & Society alumnus Just Kist.

The research examines what role YouTube plays in the globalization of pop music. More specifically, it analyses the origins of the most popular music videos in a selection of European and Asian video charts on YouTube. The results show that the internet has closed the gap between cultures from different parts of the world to only a limited extent, though the growing importance of K-pop is visible.

The edited volume for which Dr. Verboord's and Kist's article is a contribution "provide[s] readers with grounded analysis in the organizational and economic logics of Asian creative industries, national cultural policies that promote or hinder cultural flows, and the media convergence and online consumers' surging demand for Asianized cultural products. Such insights are of crucial importance for a better understanding of the dynamics of transnational cultural flows in contemporary Asia."

MA Thesis

The article is based on the Master's Thesis that Just Kist wrote in the Master Media Studies programme in 2014. The book is expected on September 12, 2018. More information can be found on Springer's website.
