ESHCC represented at NWO Bessensap and contributes to groundbreaking literature on race, ethnicity and racism in sports coaching

Book cover of Race, ethnicity and racism in sports coaching

On 12 June, Jacco van Sterkenburg will present on the topic of racism in mediated football at ‘NWO Bessensap’. NWO Bessensap is a collaboration between the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the Association for Science Journalism and Communication Netherlands (VWN). Around 350 journalists, press officers and researchers will meet to exchange knowledge on the latest developments in science and communication.

This year it will be an online event from the Jaarbeurs (Utrecht). More information on the NWO Bessensap event.

On the same topic, the edited book collection ‘'Race', Ethnicity and Racism in Sports Coaching’ has been published, co-edited by Van Sterkenburg with colleagues Bradbury and Lusted. While the e-book has been published now, the print version will be available per July, by Routledge.

The book focuses specifically on how ‘race’, ethnicity and racism operate within the socio-cultural sphere of sports coaching. Featuring multi-disciplinary perspectives including sociology, racial/ethnic studies, management studies and media studies, the book is arranged into three thematic sections, addressing the central topics of representation and racialised barriers in sports coaching; racialised identities, diversity and intersectionality in sports coaching; and formalised racial equality interventions in sports coaching.

The literature includes case studies from across North America, Europe and Australasia, and has been cited as essential reading for students, academics and practitioners with a critical interest in the sociology of sport, sport coaching, sport management, sport development, and ‘race’ and ethnicity studies.

Dr. Van Sterkenburg collaborated with Dr. Steven Bradbury (Loughborough University) and Dr. Jim Lusted (The Open University) on the publication which can be purchased in hardback and downloaded as an e-book at Routledge.
