Xiaoyu Zhang’s research domain includes cyber nationalism in Chinese context, focusing on the discourse of cyber nationalism and the interplay between subculture and nationalism. She will conduct this research as a PhD candidate at ESHCC, supervised by Prof. Jeroen Jansz and Dr. Delia Dumitrica.

Before coming to the Netherlands, Xiaoyu got her bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Television from Anhui University and a master’s in Philosophy from the University of Science and Technology of China. This interdisciplinary background gives her different perspectives to scrutinize questions related to media and communication. She was lucky enough to attend several academic workshops focusing on Communication or Management held by PKU, THU, FDU, and Harvard-Yenching Institute, as well as several academic conferences at home and abroad, during which she met numerous excellent scholars and affirmed her determination to pursue academic achievements.

Realizing the divergence in media and communication research between Chinese scholarship and western scholarship, she decided to apply for the PhD position in western countries. She is happy to join Erasmus University Rotterdam and receive the guidance of Prof. Jeroen Jansz and Dr. Delia Dumitrica.

In her spare time, Xiaoyu enjoys cooking Chinese food and watching documentaries, especially BBC series. Besides, she loves to travel around to experience the local life. She hopes to travel around Europe during her four-year stay here.
