Tina van der Vlies joined the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Museum of Education

Alexander Santos Lima

Tina van der Vlies is the newest member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Museum of Education. The Scientific Advisory Board aims to connect science and the practicalities of the museum. The members strengthen the position of the museum as knowledge institute and help to develop a strong connection between academia and the museum.

The National Museum of Education is an exhibition and educational venue where the public can learn about the broad developments in Dutch education in an accessible way. In Fall 2021, the Advisory Board has been introduced at the National Museum of Education, consisting of prof. dr. Hilda Amsing, dr. John Exalto, prof. em. dr. Sjoerd Karsten, dr. Sarah van Ruyskensvelde and dr. Tina van der Vlies. As part of the board, Tina van der Vlies is involved in the substantive course of the museum, a critical partner and ambassador of the museum, with the aim to connect science with the practicalities of the museum.

Her membership of the Scientific Advisory board aligns with her NWO Rubicon research ‘Why school history matters’.  For this project Tina van der Vlies investigates English and Dutch newspapers (1920-2020) and wonders how and why the attributed purposes to history education change over time.  The outcomes enlighten present-day debates about school history’s role in society.

She was invited for the international panel ‘Beyond Heroes and Villains: Memory and Representations of the Indonesian War of Independence 1945-1949’. Taking case studies from both countries, Indonesia and the Netherlands, this international panel will highlight the complexities of the war by showing the layers of memories of violence, exclusion of certain groups in the nation’s collective memory, and discuss representations in history textbooks. The other panel speakers are: Indah Wahyu Puji Utami (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Arif Subekti & Grace Leksana (Malang State University) and Esther Captain (KITLV).
