The study programme in a nutshell
The pre-master Media Studies is an intensive programme that prepares you for one of our master specialisations: Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Culture & Society or Media & Journalistiek (NL).
Scroll down to have a look at the study programme per pre-master specialisation for the academic year 2023 – 2024.
Duration of the programme
The pre-master takes one year. During this year you must obtain 45 course credits, rather than the 60 credits in our regular master specialisations. This gives you the time to adjust to the pace of studying at our university while getting ready for the following master specialisation.
When you successfully finish the pre-master, you gain direct access to the corresponding Media Studies Master.
Developing analytical skills
In the first term you will familiarise yourself with the most essential concepts and theories in media studies. In addition, you work on your academic skills such as argumentation, using academic sources and writing an academic paper. The second term focuses on improving your research skills; you learn how to set-up a research project, conduct analyses and report your findings.
This solid basis prepares you for the second half of the pre-master in which you follow one course on the topic of your pre-master programme, and work on conducting your own research project to finalise the pre-master year. In this research project you put everything you learned in practice.
Teaching language
All pre-master specialisations and courses are taught entirely in English. Except for Media & Journalistiek, in which the tutorials are taught in Dutch*.
*If the group is smaller than 10 students, the Dutch tutorial group will be merged with English tutorial groups.
The various pre-master programmes
Below you can find the programmes for the four different pre-master programmes. The English pre-masters prepare you for either Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries or Media, Culture & Society. The pre-master programme Media & Journalistiek prepares you for the Dutch Master Media & Journalistiek. To enroll in this pre-master programme, you must therefore master the Dutch language.
