Qualtrics helps you design, distribute and analyse surveys, feedback forms and other response-based activities in one platform. You can create surveys with different question types, use branching and survey flow to show different paths to different respondents, preview and test the survey before sending it out, distribute it through survey links or email, and analyse results through reports and dashboards. This makes Qualtrics useful both for teaching research design and for collecting structured feedback or course-related data. Qualtrics’ official support materials explicitly cover survey construction, branching, preview testing, distribution and reporting inside one project workflow.

Examples of use in your education

Use Qualtrics when you want students to learn how to design, test and interpret a survey as part of a research methods course, thesis trajectory or project-based assignment.

You can apply this tool in your teaching in several concrete ways:

  • Questionnaire design - Ask students to build a short survey in Qualtrics, so they practise turning a research question into clear, answerable survey questions.

  • Question testing - Let students test each other’s surveys before data collection, so they can identify unclear wording, confusing answer options or missing response categories.

  • Data collection practice - Use a small class-based survey exercise to show how survey distribution, response rates and consent information affect the quality of collected data.

  • Results interpretation - Ask students to review basic survey results and explain what the responses can and cannot show in relation to the original research question.

Tip 1

Keep the first student survey short. This helps students focus on question quality, answer options and survey logic before working with longer or more complex questionnaires.

Tip 2

Ask students to pilot the survey with a small number of peers before sharing it more widely. This helps them find problems in wording, routing or response options early.

Use Qualtrics when you want to collect structured input from students before, during or after a course activity.

You can apply this tool in your teaching in several concrete ways:

  • Mid-course feedback - Use a short Qualtrics survey halfway through the course to ask students what supports their learning and where they need more clarification.

  • Needs analysis - Collect information about students’ prior experience, expectations or support needs before a course, workshop or skills session begins.

  • Activity evaluation - Use Qualtrics after a guest lecture, training session, field activity or workshop to collect feedback that can inform future teaching.

  • Follow-up planning - Review response patterns and use them to decide what to clarify, adjust or discuss with students in a later session.

Tip 1

Only ask questions that you are prepared to interpret or act on. This keeps the survey focused and avoids collecting feedback that students never see reflected in the course.

Tip 2

Tell students how their input will be used. Even a short follow-up message or in-class explanation can help students see that their feedback contributes to teaching decisions.
